What I Learned from Taking a Month Off from Tracking

In August, I made a bold decision: I stopped tracking my food and spent minimal time in the gym. At first, it felt scary. Part of me wanted to throw in the towel and say, “Screw it, I’m done.” But if there’s one thing this journey has taught me, it’s this: true health and wellness are about so much more than sticking to a plan. It’s about knowing yourself deeply and understanding what you need in any given moment.

When Pushing Through Was the Right Choice

Rewind to earlier this year—I was in the middle of a divorce, navigating some of the hardest emotions I’ve ever felt. In those moments, tracking my food and sticking to my fitness plan became my anchor. It gave me a sense of normalcy when everything else felt out of control. Even though it was hard, I pushed through. I kept tracking, stayed on my cut, and leaned on the structure to carry me through that storm.

When Letting Go Was the Right Choice

But by the end of August, something shifted. Mentally, I felt drained. My plate was overflowing, and I knew deep down that I needed a break. So, I took one.

For a month, I stopped tracking my food—but I didn’t throw all my habits out the window. Instead, I focused on maintaining the quality and quantity of food that I knew worked for me. I walked, journaled, meditated, and prioritized activities that felt good for my mind and body.

I didn’t completely disconnect from my goals either. I kept up with my check-ins and communicated openly with my coach, even meeting with him in person twice during that time.

The Bigger Picture of Health

This experience taught me something profound: true health and wellness go far beyond physical transformation. It’s about understanding yourself on a deeper level—recognizing when to push and when to pause, when to track every macro and when to let go of the numbers.

Taking that break wasn’t about losing control; it was about exercising a different kind of control. It was about supporting myself—mentally, physically, and emotionally—and feeling confident in my choices, no matter what they were.

It’s More Than Fat Loss

When I started this journey, it was all about fat loss. But along the way, I realized it’s so much bigger than that. It’s about learning who you are, what you need, and how to support yourself through every season of life.

So if you find yourself needing to pause, recalibrate, or take a step back, remember this: that’s not failure. That’s growth. That’s part of the process. And when you can confidently navigate those moments, you’ll know you’ve truly got it. 😘
